Our History

Early in 1993, a large mining company approached Peter Schoonens, the original owner of Austral Technologies, with a view to developing a unique process to extend the life of their High-Pressure Rolls Crushers.

A specialized team was assembled and research began into developing processes and procedures to Hard-face Rebuild these components. A welding process was chosen to be the most appropriate and one of the challenges was that the components were cast in a particular exotic iron that to current technology, was un-weldable.

By the end of 1993, Austral Technologies was regularly rebuilding these components and had achieved deposit thicknesses that was historically unheard of and never done before. By the end of the seven-year contract, Austral Technologies was successfully depositing hard-facing layers up to 160mm thick.

From this point onwards, Austral Technologies embarked on a mission to be the pre-eminent Surface Engineering Company in the southern hemisphere. Austral focuses on researching and applying the most appropriate solution to a variety of Wear Related challenges.
